Week 1
Where the Wildlife is, fun is there!
Welcome everyone to the first week of camp, new location but same old fun!
Day 1
We had a roarsome time at camp today! Teams Red, Blue, and Yellow had lots of fun in the Discovery, Play, Projects, and Creators classes. Discovery had learned to care for a plushie animal they chose, Play had the jungle hot potato game, Projects had the animal adaptation lab, and Creators made imaginary friends after reading The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend. Innovators, Engineers, and Studio Art hosted the Purple, Green, Orange, and Silver teams. Engineers learned animals while making name tags, Innovators started to build wildlife crossings, and Studio Art made clay forest critters. The Purple Team started this week off strong with “get to know you” games that required everyone to work as a team in Games. We took turns passing a ball introducing ourselves and sharing our favorite color. We then had to pass the same ball around the circle but there was a catch, we could only use our feet to pass the ball. We finished out the class by playing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Cone. Everyone had the chance to be the caller for this activity. The Silver, Green, and Orange teams welcomed some Guest Volunteers to come in and teach us all about soccer. We learned how to do some warm up drills, shooting goal drills and then we ended the class with a scrimmage. Campers had a blast today and can’t wait for them to come back later this week! Today Yak Apprentices and Teen Voyagers campers learned about kitchen safety in Cooking. Some chose a matching vocabulary sheet, and some chose to make chef hats. We discussed what cooking class would look like at camp. All the Explorers teams had lots of fun in Music and Play today!
Day 2
We continue to have a wild time at camp! Today in Games Class, the Purple Team put our skills to the test with various board games. Campers enjoyed a change in pace with this calm, and self paced day. Everyone found a game to play with a friend so that all of our friends could participate! Our Teen Voyagers started this week off strong with “get to know you” games that required everyone to work as a team. We took turns passing a ball introducing ourselves and sharing our favorite color. We then had to pass the same ball around the circle but there was a catch, we could only use our feet to pass the ball. We finished out the class by playing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Cone. Everyone had the chance to be the caller for this activity! In Play Group, teams Red, Yellow, and Blue used teamwork and listening skills to play a “Giant Jungle Ball” parachute game”. Campers also took turns being the “elephant” that reaches their arm (“trunk”) through the parachute hole, and also took turns leading the “Play Group” song. Teams Silver, Green, and Orange made soft pretzel bites with salt in the air fryer in Cooking class. Campers were excited to cook their first item of the summer! While the pretzels were cooking, campers learned about kitchen vocabulary! In Creators, teams Red, Yellow, and Blue made habitats for their imaginary friends after reading The Tagalongs: Discovering the Magic of Friendship in the Great Outdoors. In Discovery, campers built animal shelters for their plushies. Projects had the beak lab, playing with tools to learn about how different types of beaks have different advantages. The Orange, Green, and Purple teams had a lot of fun in the following classes. Engineers made animals out of clay and learned about more animals! Innovators continued construction on their wildlife bridges, its going really well! It was really cool! Studio Art class painted the clay critters that were made last time, they're so pretty!
Day 3
Halfway through our amazing week! Today in Cooking class, Yak Apprentice and Teen Voyager teams made strawberry-banana yogurt parfaits. They practiced their knife skills, layering and designing, and then had a tasty treat to enjoy! In Play, Teams Red, Yellow, and Blue played an animal and human ring toss game. Campers were challenged to toss soft, inflatable, animal-themed pool rings over their peers' heads from a distance in Play class. Leading the play group song and playing in the ball pit were other fun activities we did. All teams welcomed our Soccer Guests back to camp today for an exciting day of soccer fun in Games! Campers enjoyed learning new skills, staying active, and working together while playing games and having a great time. Everyone had a blast in class today. Projects class had the very wet blubber lab, learning how whales and seals stay warm. In Creators, campers were read It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny and made little bunnies out of socks. The bunnies are super cute! Discovery class had designed feeding and drinking stations for their plush animals! Purple, Orange, Green, and Silver teams had fun in Innovators testing and refining the wildlife bridges they built. Engineering class painted their clay animals, learning about animals and their habitats through a fun matching activity.
Day 4
The fun hunt still goes on! In Creators, Chameleon's Color’s was read aloud to teams Red, Blue, and Yellow. Then painted chameleon colors and patterns, so beautiful! Discovery class learned how to provide first aid to their animal plushies, they're such good veterinarians! Projects class learned about camouflage and made some paper animals to camouflage in habitats. In Play class, campers partook in giant inflatable bowling and got lots of strikes! Green, Orange, Purple, and Silver teams had fun in Engineers designing dangerous animals and continuing to work on the animal sculptures they made. Innovators got to share their wildlife bridges with each other and it was fun talking about how unique each design was! Games class was filled with smiles and laughter! We passed a ball down the line of campers alternating the passing over our head and under our legs for the best time! Campers enjoyed working together to beat the clock. We then used our new Topple Turners to play a number of relay race games. In Cooking class Orange, Silver, and Green made yummy sushi rolls! They had rice, nori sheets, cucumber, avocado, carrot, and tuna.
In Play, camper teams Red, Yellow, and Blue played “Jungle Animal Freeze Dance”. While the jungle drum music played, campers danced around to the beat. When the music stopped, campers had to freeze as quickly as possible in an animal pose. The game expanded into Jungle musical chairs, in which campers were introduced to the concept of what it looks like to be a good friend within the context of a fast-moving group game. Creators class read Polar Bear Island, then made polar bears and penguins out of paper cups. They're happy on their paper plate icebergs! In Discovery class, campers got their wildlife hero certificates today since they did an excellent job helping their animals throughout the week! Projects class partook in the Adaptation Olympics, each challenge showed how an adaptation helped an animal survived. Campers practiced coordination, accuracy, and teamwork through a variety of fun ball challenges in Games! They rolled balls under obstacles, bounced basketballs with control, carefully rolled balls along a line, and worked together to topple targets. These activities helped build hand-eye coordination, balance, focus, and confidence while giving campers plenty of opportunities to encourage one another, celebrate successes, and have fun learning new skills together. Today in Cooking class, campers made their own fruit smoothie! Yak Apprentices and Teen Voyager teams chose between strawberry banana, mixed berry, and tropical fruits. Campers measured their fruit and their choice of alternate milk or sugar-free juice, added ice, and blended themselves a cool treat on a hot day. Purple, Green, Orange, and Silver teams got the chance to share what they made this week in Engineers class, it was cool to see everyone's hard work! Campers also got to vote on what animal they learned this week was most dangerous. Innovators got to learn about real world wildlife crossings and polish their wildlife crossings. Studio Art got to make Shrinky Dinks, they look amazing! A very nice therapy dog got to come visit during Recess, everyone loved the doggo!
