Belonging Takes Shared Commitment
Belonging at Camp Yakety Yak is something we build with intention. Long before summer begins, we take time to get to know each camper—learning what helps them feel safe, connected, and understood. We read every registration form, every Individual Education Plan (IEP) and meet personally with many new families, so we can design supports, train our staff and volunteers, and prepare an environment where each young person can participate fully and authentically.
This work is relational and highly coordinated. This year, our program brings together 53 staff members, 35 graduate students, and 175 volunteers, all working in tandem to create a community where youth can build friendships, try new things, and be recognized and valued for who they are.
Families are making complex decisions about care. Especially for youth experiencing disabilities, finding the right program matters—and plans may change as families navigate what best supports their child.
At the same time, sustaining a consistent, well-prepared experience for all campers requires early planning and shared commitment. While we maintain a waitlist, by May, families have typically finalized summer arrangements, and at that stage, openings are often difficult to fill. After May 1, we continue to offer full refunds less the $100 tuition deposit, acknowledging the commitment of time we have already invested in each youth.
Because we invest significantly in staffing, training, and preparation well in advance, our cancellation policy helps ensure the program remains stable and sustainable. After June 1, we offer tuition refunds at 50% as we have much work to do to fill the space left by a late cancellation. After July 1, we have hired all summer staff, purchased all of our supplies, moved into our camp location and are focused on staff and volunteer training and setting up classrooms. Filling spots that are cancelled after that date is highly unlikely, therefore we don't offer tuition refunds after that date.
While we approach every situation with care, we are not able to make exceptions outside of these policies. Maintaining these policies allows us to deliver on our commitments to every young person who joins our community.
We’re grateful to be part of each family’s journey and to work alongside you in creating spaces where youth feel valued, supported, and that they truly belong.
