Week 2
The Second Frontier, Space!
This week our campers are strapping on spacesuits to venture out into space!
Day 1
The Red, Yellow, Blue teams had a blast playing a group game called Four Planets (four corners) in Play class. Campers took turns being the leader. Camper teams also played “Zip Zoom Ball”, a two-person kinetic game where players pull their arms apart to send a colorful ball whizzing back and forth along two taut strings. Creators read Mousetronaut Goes to Mars and made their own mission to Mars paintings, it was messy fun! In Projects, they started astronaut academy with creating some cool nametags. Discovery started the sky detective agency learning about the sun and moon, it looks like the start of an interesting case! Purple, Orange, Green, and Silver teams created mission log journals in Engineers. Innovators started the meteor defense lab with testing materials to protect against meteorites, it was super cool! Studio Art had campers make paper maché black holes with paper bowls, they did a good job! Today in Games class, campers put their coordination, teamwork, and focus to the test with two fun hula hoop challenges! "Hula Hoop Hoppers" had campers working together to move hoops down the line without letting go of each other, encouraging communication, problem-solving, and plenty of laughter. Next, "Hula Hoop Balance Down the Line" challenged campers to carefully pass a balanced hoop from one person to the next. This activity built patience, body control, and teamwork as everyone worked toward a common goal. Yak Apprentice opened up the Yak Shack for the year and its making lots of business!
Day 2
Red, Yellow, Blue teams put their teamwork to the test in Play with a group game called “Asteroid Clean up”. Campers were split into two teams, using pool noodles to sweep asteroids (ball pit balls) to the other teams’ side for 60 seconds. When the timer went off, the team with the fewest asteroids won! Discovery class had campers identify objects by their shadow, even jumping into fun shadow puppets. They were excellent sleuths in the sky detective agency! Creators made shooting star necklaces, decorating with all sorts of shiny things and making pretty jewelry! Green, Silver, and Orange teams made trail mix in Cooking class. Campers decided what they want/don’t want in their mix, and drew their favorite meal while snacking. Favorite meals included everything from french fries, to pesto pasta! Innovators built shields to protect habitats from meteors, they did such a good job in the meteor defense lab! Studio Art made galaxy slime, making their own little star system to fidget with. Engineers continued the rocket lab with creating straw rockets powered by their breath, they made great ships for space travel! Today in Games Class the Purple Team put our skills to the test with various board games. Campers enjoyed a change in pace with this calm, and self paced day. Our Teen Voyagers campers put their coordination, teamwork, and focus to the test with the "Hula Hoop Hoppers" and "Hula Hoop Balance Down the Line" challenges. They had lots of fun!
Day 3
The Red, Yellow, and Blue teams got to Play, partaking in a variety of space-themed parachute games like 'Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, Blast Off!', 'Space Launch', and 'Secret Astronaut'. The “Secret Austronaut” game involved all campers closing their eyes while the adult chose a camper to hide under the parachute and say “Who am I?” Camper teams had to guess which astronaut was under the parachute based on their voice alone…some astronauts’ voices were even disguised to be extra challenging to identify! Creators read There was a Blackhole that Swallowed the Universe and made hungry black holes out of paper plates. Discovery's sky detective agency got to learn about the phases of the moon and if it meant the moon was always changing or not. They were excellent sleuths! Projects continued astronaut academy with the zero gravity lab, testing which materials and shapes fell the slowest. They got to learn so much from the fun tests! Green, Orange, Purple, and Silver got to use clay to create handmade beads in Studio Art. Innovators continued the meteor defense lab by testing their shields against meteors and improving their designs according to the results, they were great scientists. Engineers got to experience rocket science by testing different fins and angles on their straw rockets, it was a spectacular experiment! In Games, we had a blast playing a variety of fun and active games! Campers enjoyed Musical Chairs, a fast-paced Tic Tac Toe Relay, a bean bag toss, and a 'Keep the Ball Up' challenge that encouraged teamwork and coordination. Everyone stayed active, cheered each other on, and showed great sportsmanship throughout the activities! Today in Cooking, Yak Apprentice and Teen Voyager teams made watermelon lime slushies, using frozen watermelon and lime juice. The sweet watermelon and sour lime made a great treat on a hot day. Campers had a fun time playing 'Alien Says' at Recess!
Day 4
Discovery had the Red, Yellow, and Blue teams learn about how phases of the moon affects animals. They were such great super sleuths finding clues leading to new knowledge to help the moon! In Creators, campers read Pete the Cat: Out of This World and made paper bag jet backpacks. Projects class got to build small scale moon bases for astronaut academy, they made excellent space quarters! In Play, teams experienced the colors of the galaxy and twinkling stars of the play room sky. Astronauts experienced crawling through tunnels carrying cardboard bricks, to then re-build a broken “space satellite" on the other side. Nice work everyone! Studio Art painted the clay beads they made yesterday, they're so pretty! Engineers got to play with stomp rockets in the gym to learn about launches, super fun rocket science! In Cooking class the Green, Orange, and Silver teams made banana “nice” cream, with bananas, alternate milk, and vanilla extract. It was a hit and was delicious! The Purple Team spent time building teamwork and strengthening friendships by playing a variety of board games together in Games class. Our Teen Voyagers had a blast playing Musical Chairs, Tic Tac Toe Relay, Bean Bag Toss, and the "Keep the Ball Up" challenge. It was super fun!
Day 5
In Creators, Norbit goes to Orbit was read to teams Red, Yellow, and Blue. Then they got to paint with watercolors while watching Bill Nye the Science Guy, science rules! Discovery finished their work with the sky detective agency by building sundials to help the sun tell time, excellent job detectives! Projects class finished astronaut academy with making first contact with an alien named Zog, everyone wrote lovely letters to him! Play class got to do the most out of this world obstacle course! It started with the 'Saturn Ring Spin', then the 'Alien Crawl' through the tunnel, next the 'Planet Push' to push the big ball through the chair asteroid belt, the 'Constellation Hop' jumping from one floor dot to the next, then the 'Rocket Fuel Fill-Up' to throw bean bags into the Cornhole target, and finally the 'Zero Gravity Walk' across a bubble wrap bridge. Orange, Green, Purple, and Silver got to learn about NASA's Double Asteroid Defense Test (DART) and how it protects us in Innovators' meteor defense lab. Studio Art finished their clay beads by creating bracelets and necklaces to add their beads too, plus adding the perfect shrinky charms! Today in Cooking class, Yak Apprentice and Teen Voyager teams made walking chicken/black bean nachos. We opened a mini bag of chips, added our nacho toppings, and enjoyed a fun and simple snack. Some campers made it spicy with hot sauce! In Games, everyone got to enjoy open gym. It's the perfect opportunity for campers to spend time with the new friends they've made at camp. Whether they're playing basketball, volleyball, or creating their own games, the gym is always filled with laughter and teamwork. It's exciting to watch campers encourage one another, make new connections, and build lasting friendships. These moments help campers grow in confidence while having fun together. We love seeing friendships continue to flourish both during activities and in their free time! We also got a lovely visit from Ceasar the No Drama Llama during Recess, everyone got a chance to pet his soft fur and hug him! Everyone loved seeing Ceasar and hope he had a blast!
