SuperYaks: The Power Within- Day 2
Super Yaks to the rescue! A superhero announcement from Camp Yakety Yak!
It was another successful day at camp today. We started off our day with our daily morning meeting and then began the fun-filled day of classes and activities! We continued to focus on being our own superheroes, being courageous and taking risks. Our campers ended the super day with some fantastic talents and a great dance party!
Check out what else we did in classes today!
Chit Chat:
Today was Miss Kelsey’s first day as Chit Chat instructor so we did introductions, rules and expectations, and reviewed this week’s read aloud! We watched a short video about what makes a hero, and shared personal experiences of times that we chose to leave our comfort zone and overcame our fears.
Yak Academy:
Today we began making our Superhero puppets after learning some of the supervillain weaknesses (which included kittens, laughter, and pickles). Campers were given a template to copy and the freedom to deviate. Campers have two examples of completed puppets; (our supervillains Dr. Bad Manners and Professor Rude) a color photocopy of the pieces used to make the puppets; access to supplies; and the freedom to do whatever they wanted. Some of us can get frustrated when our best efforts don’t match the example, particularly when we are using a new or difficult to use material such as felt or fabric. Others of us aren’t really interested in the limitations of an example or instructions and want the freedom of self-creation. I heard a lot of creativity bursting from small shapes of construction paper and scraps of felt as our superheroes armed themselves for battle against rudeness and bad manners.
Games:
Today our superheroes in training continued to develop their skills. They started out with a few quick rounds of Superhero Tag to warm up and then we moved on to Stop the Bomb. The novice superheroes were informed that the evil villain had developed a bomb that neutralized any superhero’s powers when it hit the ground. The villain had dropped the bomb (a beach ball) and the superheroes had to work together to keep the bomb from hitting the ground. After a few rounds the superheroes really started to work as a team and the number of times they were to intercept and redirect the bomb (hit the beach ball into the air) kept increasing. Sadly, our training ended much too early for many of them. But, there is no need to be concerned, I’m sure the villain will strike again later this week!
Cooking:
Today in cooking we made superhero shields out of toast. The JCC, Orange, Yellow, and Silver teams cut toast into the shape of a shield. Then they put on butter and cinnamon and sugar.
To complete their shields they decorated them with icing. As a group we talked about how this was a sometimes food. After they were done eating their treat we filled out a sheet about being a superhero. We talked about their name and what their superpowers were. The campers also talked about what their favorite everyday and sometimes foods were. The teams had fun making their shield and talking about being a superhero. All teams were safe in the kitchen and were respectful to their friends.
Discovery:
Today we continued our discussion about the qualities of a classroom superhero. Then, we built our own superhero picture. We used watercolors to paint a background and then cut out houses and buildings to put on our picture. The last step was to decorate a superhero to mirror yourself and paste it in the picture. The pictures looked like we were flying in the sky, helping others. We really worked on sharing materials, showing off our outstanding work and working together to create these beautiful masterpieces. We were all superheroes in Discovery today!
