SuperYaks: The Power Within-Day 1

SuperYaks to the rescue! A superhero announcement from Camp Yakety Yak!

This week our book is Don't Be Afraid to Drop, by Julia Cook and we focused on being courageous and not afraid to take risks. We were introduced SuperYak, Camp Yakety Yak’'s superhero mascot! He might be large and shaggy with horns, but he uses his power for good! We began be talking about what makes each of us special (our hidden superpowers), and how we can use this as a superpower to fight against destructive decisions or friendship mistakes!

Monday was a FANTASTIC day! Check out what else we did in classes today!

Chit Chat:

Today we read Don't’ be Afraid to Drop, by Julia Cook and discussed our own emotions. We used the Zones of Regulation to describe the different emotions that we feel. Using the book, we talked about having the courage to try new things and be brave, but also how our emotions might be during those times. It was a great day!

Yak Academy:

Yak Academy is creating our superhero and superpower for our Camp Yakety Yak Green Screen Superhero Academy Puppet Theatre (CYYGSSAPT) at the end of the week (on the advice of Tatiana Maslany from her appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”). Today we learned about the supervillains; Dr. Bad Manners and Prof. Rude and their origin stories. We began prototyping our own superhero and developing their superpowers to stop these nefarious villains. We learned that both villains have many people under their spell including the occasional sibling and while they can be defeated, they never die. Our superheroes will be capable of battles those arch nemeses many times in the future and will always prevail.

Our Villains: Doctor Bad Manners was sitting with her elbows on the dinner table, talking with her mouth open, demanding salt without saying please or thank you when a waiter spilled a pail of radioactive oven grease on her. She mutated into very unpleasant person who will push everyone around. Professor Rude was in a college class experimenting with injecting donkeys with a microparticle that was found in human blood. It was supposed to turn donkeys into better house pets than dogs. Rude didn’t want to wait his turn, so he went to the lab at night to be first but he messed up the experiment because he was too impatient to read the instructions. He accidently injected himself with a rude serum.

Today we became superheroes in training! Superheroes have to be speedy and have the skills that let chase the villain when things get bad. Also, superheroes need to be strong. With that in mind we played a crazy game of Superhero Tag. In Superhero Tag everyone everyone was “it” and had a card with a number from one and ten written on it. One person’s card has a gold star. When campers tagged each other, they exchanged cards and then tried to find someone else to tag. At random times during the game there was an exercise break. The person with the gold star got to help pick the exercise and everyone else did that exercise the number of times written on the card they end up with. Exercises today included jumping-jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, squats and even burpees!

This week we celebrate our inner Superhero! To help make our bodies super strong the JCC, Orange, Yellow, and Silver teams made homemade ranch. We then took celery and carrots and dipped them into the ranch. This was a yummy treat! The campers loved learning how to measure spices. It was also fun to see all of the spices mix together in the blender. All campers stayed safe in the kitchen and had a great time.

Today we became Superheroes! We first talked about how each of us could be superheros at camp and the qualities that make up an awesome superhero. The campers came up with words like kind, a good friend, helpful, focused and caring as some of the words that describe a class superhero. We then made superhero masks to transform into our very own superheroes! We used paper plates, paint, construction paper, markers and lots of creativity to construct our masks. Some campers made masks that resembled superheroes they knew and some created brand new superheroes, like Captain Kind! It was a fantastic day!
